BIOT 501--Ethical Issues in Biology (UNH Manchester): Activity

This Research Guide will help you research your topics for the BSCI 501 course.

Activity 1

I'm Kate Norton a librarian on campus. I will visit class for a research workshop. Please have a laptop with you. This is not the typical library lesson. Instead, we will ask you to use your time to find sources for the first debate. Please review the Academic Search Ultimate database before our meeting. To prepare for the workshop do the following:

  • Review your debate topic (assigned by Dr. Halpin)
  • Navigate to the Research module and view the Academic Search Ultimate tutorial
  • As you watch the tutorial note the content filters (pay attention to the publication date and format type)
  • Be prepared to tell me how you limit your results to Academic Journals
  • Identify three keywords you will use to find articles in Academic Search Ultimate
  • Complete the keyword quiz

Activity 2

1. Use the Library Search Box or Academic Search Ultimate to find 2 articles

  • Construct a keyword string. (Refer back to the keywords you used in the quiz).

2. Read the abstract and use the PROVEN tool to determine if the article is relevant to your research need

3. List where you found your article.

4. Provide an APA reference.

5. Describe how your article is relevant to your research question.

6. Describe how you will use the article in your assignment.

Example:

Hendricks-Sturrup, & Lu, C. Y. (2019). Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing Data Privacy: Key Concerns

and Recommendations Based on Consumer Perspectives. Journal of Personalized Medicine9(2),

25–31. https://doi.org/10.3390/jpm9020025

  • Article from Library Search Box
  • The article demonstrates consumers do not understand direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies' privacy policies.
  • I will use this article to argue that DTC-GT companies cannot retain genetic information indefinitely.
