APA Citation Style, 7th ed (UNH Manchester Library): Periodicals (Journals, Newspapers...)

Sample Citations for Articles in Periodicals

Below are examples of citations for articles from periodicals such as journals, newspapers and magazines.

Remember, all reference list entries are double spaced and in hanging indent format.  Example:

undefined

In the 7th edition of the APA manual, we are instructed to think of the document type, rather than the format (online, print, etc.) when determining how to write a reference for a source. This may take some adjustment for students accustomed to thinking about format first.

For more examples to follow, consult the 7th edition of the APA manual or the APA website

Journal Article with DOI

Archbold, C.A., Hassell, K. D., & Stichman, A. (2010). Comparing promotion aspirations among female and male police officers. International Journal of Police Science & Management, 12(2), 287-303. https://doi.org/10.1350/ijps.2010.12.2.175

In-text citation: (Archbold et al., 2010)

Note: A DOI should be recorded as a URL (not preceded by “doi:”), such as http://dx.doi.org/10.1067/rmh0000008. Leave links live so readers may click on them.

Journal Article without DOI

Ingram, J. D., & Triadafilopoulous, T. (2010). Rights, norms, and politics: The case of German citizenship reform. Social Research, 77, 353-382.

In-text citation: (Ingram & Triadafilopoulous, 2010)

Note: If a DOI isn't available, omit it and end the citation after the page range. If the journal article does not have a DOI but does have a URL that will resolve for readers (as from an online journal that is not part of a database), include the URL of the article at the end of the reference.

Journal Article with Article Number

Doubleday, A., Choe, Y., Busch Isaksen, T., Miles, S., & Errett, N. A. (2021). How did outdoor biking and walking change during COVID-19?: A case study of three U.S. cities. PLoS ONE 16(1), Article e0245514. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0245514

Note: When articles have article numbers, eLocators, etc., include the article number in the references list in place of the page range. If page numbers are present on a PDF version of the digital article, the page numbers may be used for in-text citations only.

Newspaper Article

Needleman, S. E. (2010, June 1). Merchants push sales through social media: Early adopters add shopping-cart apps to fan pages to sell items, services. The Wall Street Journal.

Note: Provide whatever access information is provided for the article. For more about the possibilities, see this page on Newspaper Article References
