Citation standards for datasets are still evolving. When citing data, you can use the format of a style manual (such as APA) or use the data repository's preferred citation.

DataCite, for example, recommends the following format for data citation:

• Creator (Publication Year): Title. Publisher. Identifier

• Creator (Publication Year): Title. Version. Publisher.  Resource Type. Identifier (Version and Resource Type are optional properties)

Here's an example from the DataCite website:

• Irino, T; Tada, R (2009): Chemical and mineral compositions of sediments from ODP Site 127‐797. Geological Institute, University of Tokyo.http://dx.doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.726855
