Mentoring is critical for everyone regardless of their discipline. Whether you're an NSF (National Science Foundation) grantee addressing new requirements, a leader aiming to foster a culture of strong mentorship at your institution, or simply looking to enhance your own mentee or mentor skills, these resources can be valuable. They are tailored to different roles, though some may overlap. For example, postdoctoral students often find themselves both receiving and providing mentorship in nearly equal measure. They may benefit from utilizing multiple resources depending on the situation.

This webinar shared more about NSF’s new graduate student mentoring requirements for grants submitted on or after May 22, 2024 and about how a panel of graduate deans and a Vice President for Research are preparing PIs and prospective PIs on their campuses to meet them. The workshop featured presentations from NSF leadership, graduate deans and senior research administrators, including time for questions about the new requirements and the resources currently available to help PIs become more effective mentors.
In this 90-minute virtual workshop, participants learned about NSF’s new graduate student mentoring requirements for grants submitted on or after May 22, 2024. NSF leaders provided a review of the new requirements, which apply to any grant that provides support to graduate students. Next, disciplinary society leaders and faculty with distinguished records as researchers and mentors provided strategies and examples for improving both mentoring and research outcomes.
