Ocean Mapping (UNH - Durham)

Information on finding bathymetric and other ocean maps; resources for ESCI courses that involve ocean mapping

Maps in the UNH Library

Maps are found in Dimond Library in various locations:

  • Most paper maps are in the Map Room on the main floor (Level 3)
  • Many USGS maps, soil surveys, and a few other maps are in the government publications collections on Level 1
  • Maps and geospatial data on CD-ROM and DVD maps and geospatial data are located in the corridor to Room 339
  • Atlases are found in the Reference collection on the main floor (Level 1)
  • Older and rare maps may be found in Special Collections & Archives on Level 1.

There are some non-government maps in the library's main book stacks on Levels 4 or 5.

While many maps can be found by searching the library's online catalog, some documents older than 1976 and some maps in the Map Room are not cataloged and may require staff assistance to locate.

Strategies for Locating Ocean Maps

Maps published as stand-alone items can be found in our library collections using the library search box or the library catalog. Results can be filtered by  'Maps' under Resource Type.

Some terms and phrases to use in keyword searches include:

  • bathymetr*
  • ocean bottom
  • submarine topography
  • hydrographic surveys
  • multibeam
  • submarine geology
  • geological mapping [combined with terms such as ocean*]

Catalog subject headings for maps often start with the geographic area followed by the type of map, for instance, "Norwegian Sea -- Bathymetric maps".

Some maps will be filed by geographic area and thus browsing adjacent items can be useful.  Look for call numbers that begin with the letter "G."
