A legal encyclopedia is a comprehensive set of brief articles on legal topics arranged in alphabetical order by topic. The two general legal encyclopedias are American Jurisprudence, 2d (AmJur) and Corpus Juris Secundum (CJS). In addition, there are numerous state legal encyclopedias.
Articles in legal encyclopedias articles can serve as a general introduction to an area of law that is unfamiliar and identify citations to cases and other materials that may be useful on a particular issue. These articles are not intended to be authoritative souces on the law in any area.
A legal treatise focuses on a limited subject area of the law and is written by scholars in that field. A legal treatise may range in size from a single volume to a a set of volumes.
