Federal Statutes

Federal statutes are enacted by Congress and either signed by the president or passed over a veto. The statutes are organized by subject, indexed and published under a specific title number in a series of books called the United States Code.

The United States Code is divided by broad subjects into 53 titles. Editions of the main volumes of the US Code from 1994 to present are available online.

The United States Code Service, published by Lexis/Nexis, and the United States Code Annotated, published by Westlaw, are annotated editions of the US Code. Annotations provide information on legislative history and citations to cases and secondary sources. Also provided are subject indexes, finding aids, and updates.

The United States Code Annotated is available online (see under "Federal Materials" tab) through
