The arrival in 2022 of widespread generative AI writing tools such as ChatGPT, Bard (Gemini), and GPT-4 grabbed the attention of scholarly community worldwide and has not abated. These tools (they are just tools) present challenges and opportunities to researchers, instructors, and students alike. Understanding their benefits and drawbacks is extremely important so that their use does not erode the integrity of research or scholarship, and that such assessments keep current as the underlying technology evolves.
