Borrowing from Other Libraries (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a cooperative program through which libraries make materials from their collections available to other users. If UNH Library does not hold a title or article in either print or e-format we can request a copy from another library.

ILLiad is the system we use to manage interlibrary loan requests, which is separate from your UNH borrowing account.

Who can use ILL

UNH students, faculty (including emeriti), and staff are eligible to use interlibrary loan. Non-UNH borrowers should pursue interlibrary loan at their local public library. Information about signing up for an ILLIAD account is available on the Interlibrary Loan page. If you are not sure if you are eligible to use the service, please contact the Dimond Library Information Desk.

What ILL will borrow

  • If you need something, please place a request. We are not generally limited by format.
  • If an item is charged out, requesting on interlibrary loan may be faster than requesting a recall.
  • If there is a problem with an electronic resource, we can often obtain a copy quickly.
  • Interlibrary Loan also includes Document Delivery. You can request PDF copies of articles and book chapters that the UNH Library owns in print or on microform.

Limits on requests

Almost all materials are obtainable from other libraries, except:

  • Materials to be used for course reserves (contact Information Desk Staff in Dimond Library for further assistance)

  • Reference books or rare books
  • Many textbooks and dissertations
  • Material available in the UNH Library collection
  • Material for which there is a long-term or repeated need (Instead, recommend a purchase.)

Delivery and Pick-up

  • Articles delivered electronically generally arrive in 1-3 days, but may take longer depending on availability. You will be notified when your article is available. Please download and save any articles or chapters you receive as they expire from your account after 30 days.
  • Print materials generally arrive in 4-14 days, depending on availability, distance, and shipping method, and can be picked up and returned at the Information Desk in Dimond Library.

Circulation and Renewals

  • Due dates, generally between two and sixteen weeks, are assigned by the lending libraries and are printed on the white label on the front of your items.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, renewals may be possible. To request a renewal, log in to your Interlibrary Loan account. You will be notified by email if your renewal has been approved or denied.
  • Please let us know if you no longer need the items you have requested.
  • Lending libraries may also require In Library Use Only for their materials.

Return

ILL loans should be returned by the due date printed on the label. Materials can be returned to any information desk at all UNH Durham library locations, book-drops or UNH Manchester library.

  • Returning ILL materials late or damaged can jeopardize UNH's relationship with other libraries and affect ILL services for everyone. Please return or renew your materials on time.
  • Failure to return ILL materials on time may result in fines, replacement charges and having ILL and library circulation privileges suspended.
  • You are financially responsible for any damage to or loss of interlibrary loan materials. Fees are determined by the lending libraries.

Costs

Because the UNH Library does not pass ILL costs on to users, the library reserves the right to deny a request based on cost.

ILL and copyright

By requesting materials through Interlibrary Loan, users accept responsibility for complying with United States Copyright Law. Please make yourself familiar with the law by visiting, https://www.copyright.gov/title17/

The Library's Program Lead for Interlibrary Loan is responsible for monitoring and updating this policy as needed. Questions about this policy can be sent to ask@unh.libanswers.com.
